How many times has Joe changed? When were these times? How is this significant?

Joe has changed seven times prior to meeting Dorcas. The first was when he gave himself the last name of Trace on his first day of school; the second time was when he was picked out by Hunter's Hunter to train to hunt. The third time was 1893, when Vienna, Virginia was burnt down by "white sheets." At 28, in 1901, he changed again when he bought himself a piece of land. Joe then immediately says the fourth time he changed was in 1906 when he took Violet up to Rome and they got on they got on the train north.
