Objective:

Students will be able to analyze the various symbols from the novel

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4

Structure:

To begin the activity, explain to students that there are several symbols in July’s People. These symbols help readers connect to the themes. Ask students what symbols they have noticed in the novel thus far. Make a list on the board.

Then, organize students into pairs. Instruct students to create and complete a chart that lists at least four symbols, what they mean, the characters they impact, and an important quote. Students should read the text carefully....
