    Apartheid in the Present

    Kind of Activity:

    Research

    Objective:

    Students will be able to make contemporary connections to the novel’s setting.

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.6, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.8

    Structure:

    To begin the activity, explain to students that South Africa was not the only country to have an apartheid. In the United States, the Jim Crow laws were very much like apartheid. The Palestine/Israel conflict has developed into an apartheid-like structure. Consider having students read articles about modern-day apartheid systems. One good choice would be the introduction to American Apartheid by Douglass Massey.
