    How might the story have been different if it had been set further South, like in Georgia or Louisiana?

    For this question, it may be necessary to show students a map of the United States. As Dana mentions several times, Maryland is relatively close to Pennsylvania, which was a free state. If the story had been set further South in Georgia or Louisiana, the hope of escaping to freedom may have been severely diminished. Dana may not have even attempted running away because she would have known how far away she was from a free state.
