    Are the stories in this collection connected? If so, how? If not, why?

    Students will likely conclude that the stories are connected. They are connected on two levels: plot and theme. On a plot level, stories like “Between the Pool and the Gardenias” make a clear connection. The Marie in that story is the granddaughter of the mother in “Nineteen Thirty-seven” and her godmother is Lili from “A Wall of Fire Rising.” Other stories are connected only through the reader’s speculation.
