    Artistic Response

    Objective:

    Students will discuss Hughes's views on America and will artistically represent their own views.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.7, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2

    Structure:

    In "Let America Be America Again," and "I, Too," the speaker discusses America: its problems, its myths, and its promises. In class-wide discussion, have students describe the America they see depicted in Hughes's work. The teacher should stand by the board and white the students responses as they give them. For example, students might say things like, "oppressive," "unequal," "hopeful," and "home." After...
