Leon
Leon is a detective with the police department. He is married to Sonja and they have two boys together, but he is having an affair with Jane who is in he and his wife's dance class. Leon is struggling with being numb as he doesn't feel anything. When a woman goes missing he is put on the case and it becomes complex as he discovers his wife was seeing the woman who disappeared as she is a therapist. He comes clean about his affair and confesses to Sonja that he doesn't want to lose her.
Sonja
Sonja is Leon's wife. She knows he is having an affair, but wants him to tell her. She is attempting to make their marriage work by going to a dance class with him, but he is disengaged. She tries to sleep with another man, but can't and when Leon confesses to his adultery she is enraged and doesn't want to speak with him. But at the end of the story, once she knows he doesn't want to lose her, she opens herself up to the opportunity to rebuild what he broke between them.
Jane
Jane has separated from her husband as she doesn't feel any passion for him anymore. She takes a dance class where she meets Leon and begins an affair. She wants their relationship to grow but he calls it off. Her neighbors begin to not trust her anymore and soon after she calls the police on them as Nik had thrown a shoe in the bush the night Valerie disappeared. After all is said and done she doesn't let her husband back into her life and is left alone drinking, smoking and dancing in her home.
Nik
Nik is married to Paula and they live next door to Jane. They learn of her affair with a married man and Paula doesn't want her near Nik alone anymore. Nik is the one who picks up Valerie the night she disappears and after attempting to take a short cut she jumps out of the truck believing he is going to kidnap her. He leaves her there and she dies in the bush.
Paula
Paula is Nik's wife. She protects their marriage fiercely and tells Jane not to invite her husband for coffee without her being there. Paula stand with Nik through the police investigation as he told her exactly what happened with Valerie the night of her disappearance. At the end of the film she demands that Jane never come near her, her husband nor her kids ever again.
Valerie
Valerie is a therapist who's written a book about the death of her and John's daughter two years previously. She and her husband have lost the connection between them and live separate lives under the same roof. She desires closeness from him that he won't give, and when in a therapy session with a patient she believes the patient is sleeping with her husband. She goes on a drive in the night wrecking her car and becomes stranded. She's picked up by Nik, but she believes he is kidnapping her when he takes a shortcut and jumps out of the car. She falls in the bush and dies that night.
John
John is Valerie's husband. They met at Harvard and their daughter died two years ago. He is still grieving her loss and goes to the spot where she was killed constantly but never tells Valerie. He's lost all closeness with his wife and can't look her in the eye when they make love. The night that Valerie disappears and dies, John is home and hears her messages to come help her, and he chooses not to pick up the phone.
