What is ambrosia and why is it important to the narrative?
We learn that ambrosia is a heavily addictive substance made from crushed peculiar souls. Peculiars who take ambrosia have enhanced abilities, but they become addicted to the substance, which drains them of their essence. In the book many peculiars are addicted to ambrosia, which hinders them in the fight against the wights.

What is the significance of souls in the text?
Souls are incredibly significant in this text, and are especially significant to peculiar characters, who get their power from their soul. Souls are contained in the addictive substance ambrosia, which is used by many of the characters in the text and are also consumed by Hollowghasts who use souls to restore their humanity. A soul contains someone's essence, which means they are integral to a person's humanity in the text. Without a soul, beings become empty and corrupted.
