Malorie Background

Malorie Background

Malorie is a post-apocalyptic novel written by American writer Josh Malerman. It was published in July 2021 by Del Rey Books. It is the sequel to Malerman’s debut novel Bird Box which was published in 2014.

In the first installment, an unknown and unseen enemy causes havoc by influencing people to act erratically and violently. The survivors including Malorie and her two children blindfold themselves to survive and later end up in the school for the blind. Malorie opens two years later with the protagonist and her kids, Olympia and Tom, seeking a new sanctuary after the creatures break into the school. During the years, the enemy has become more terrifying as they have evolved and found a new way to attack. Over a decade later the three members are living in an abandoned summer camp under the same restrictions. Living under their mother’s strict rules the children—now teenagers—begin acting up, especially Tom who pursues ways of defeating the creatures. The new possibility of finding her parents forces Malorie to follow a group of survivors who survive without blindfolding.

Following the success of the first book and its Netflix adaptation, Malerman began the writing process of what the future holds for the characters. In this installment, the teen rebellion from her children who have lived their entire lives fearing the unknown fosters Malorie’s anxiety and greatest fears. Meanwhile, the evolution of the creatures and the casual nature of the other survivors raises more concerns about their continued existence.
