Malorie
The main character and protagonist of Malorie (and the previous novel in the series, Bird Box), Malorie is one of the few people who survived the attack of the creatures. In Malorie, the eponymous Malorie has been living at the school for the blind with her two children, Olympia and Tom, for several years. But their time at the school is coming to an end, as mass chaos erupts in the school. The three are forced again into an iterant lifestyle; they must again be resourceful to survive. And that is what Malorie is: a resourceful survivor who has gone through so much, yet has persevered and remained strong.
As her environment dictates, Malorie is also paranoid and incredibly protective of her children. She is, in essence, a mother who must go through life and parenthood alone. She is often plagued by thoughts of self-doubt about her role as a parent and how she could continue to stay alive in such a horrible and problematic world.
Olympia
Olympia is one of Malorie's two children. Like many teenagers her age, Olympia has begun to rebel against her mother and her mother's authority. In the world of Malorie, however, there aren't any guardrails left to protect the teenager from doing something too unwise. Like her mother, Olympia is headstrong, intelligent, and resourceful young woman capable of persevering and thriving despite difficult situations. And despite her mother's restrictions, she ultimately prospers.
Tom
Tom is one of Malorie's two children. Like his sister and many teenagers his age, Tom has begun to rebel against his mother and his mother's authority. Despite being so young, Tom has learned to survive in a world in which he is not able to see. And in doing so, he has not made many mistakes, something not typical of someone his age. To that end, also like his sister, Tom is an intelligent, headstrong, and resourceful young man capable of doing tremendous things. But like his sister, Tom yearns to be free from the oppressive, but necessary restrictions of the world and his mother.
The creatures
Although the creatures, which are featured at the center of Malorie and Bird Box, cannot be seen or heard (and thus have no distinctive personality), they are important characters in the world of the novel. They are at once the main antagonists of the series and are capable of bringing tremendous death and destruction to everyone.
