The narrator
The narrator is a thirty-five-year-old man. He is a man of non-white descent who is married to a white woman. They have three kids and could the happiest family, but the protagonist suffers from an inferiority complex that prevents him from succeeding.
Cecil
C (Cecil) is the oldest son of the protagonist. He is a copy of his father except the stubble, scars, and age lines. Just like his father, C is quiet and moody
Michael
X (Michael) is the younger son of the protagonist. He looks exactly like his father except he is white. According to his father, X is eccentric and charming.
Jack
Jack is a marine biologist and C’s godfather.
Lila
Lila is the protagonist’s mother.
Edith
Edith is the protagonist’s mother-in-law. She doesn’t believe her son-in-law to have any literary talent.
Claire
Claire is the protagonist’s ex-wife.
Marco
Marco is the protagonist’s friend. He allows the protagonist to use a kid’s study.
The girl
The girl is a little daughter of the protagonist and Claire.
James and George
James and George are the children of the Whites.
Shaky, Brian and Gavin
Shaky, Brian, and Gavin are the old school friends of the protagonist.
