What made the trip to Africa eye-opening and transformative for Lewis and other SNCC members in attendance?
During their trip to Africa, Lewis and his colleagues got to see numerous countries and meet with countless like-minded activists and civil rights leaders in each of these locations. What struck Lewis was how much more liberal and radical many of the activist groups he was meeting in Africa were. Most of them were more aligned with the philosophies of Malcolm X than Dr. King, and some even suggested to Lewis that no one would take his movement seriously if he weren't to the left of Malcolm X, politically speaking.
