Montana 1948 tells the story of twelve-year-old David Hayden, a native son of the fictional town of Bentrock in eastern Montana. When the Hayden family’s live-in housekeeper and David’s babysitter, a young Sioux woman named Marie Little Soldier, falls seriously ill, the family calls in David’s physician uncle, Frank, to examine her. Marie accuses Frank of molesting and raping Native women, and David’s father Wes, the Sheriff of Mercer County, must weigh his family loyalty against the call to investigate his brother’s alleged crimes.
