Montana 1948 tells the story of twelve-year-old David Hayden, a native son of the fictional town of Bentrock in eastern Montana. When the Hayden family’s live-in housekeeper and David’s babysitter, a young Sioux woman named Marie Little Soldier, falls seriously ill, the family calls in David’s physician uncle, Frank, to examine her.
