How does the director use the visual image to enhance the drama of the film?

Dmytryk enhances the noir feel of this film by creating specific elements that become attached to action in the story. One example is that every time Marlowe is knocked out the screen looks as if it is being covered with oil. Though we don't see the injury we know what has happened and it further attaches us to the story.

What do the cobwebs represent in the story?

Marlowe has awoken from being knocked out and finds himself in a mental institution where he has been heavily drugged. The cobwebs are what he sees because of the dose he's been given. Any time the cobwebs show up in subsequent scenes it means that the drugs have begun to take hold of him again.

After the entire story unfolds we learn that there was no secondary group of people out to scam Helen for her jewelry.
