Almost all of Fugard's theatrical work addresses the struggle of South Africans grappling with the effects of Apartheid, both while it was in effect and after it had ended. Fugard was a central figure in South African theater of resistance, which depicted lived experience under Apartheid and built support for its termination among sympathetic whites in South Africa and audiences abroad. In the 1960s and 1970s, Fugard and other activist playwrights often faced serious repercussions from the police for presenting unfavorable portrayals of the Apartheid system.
