My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry Background

Fredrik Backman's My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry (originally published in Sweden in 2013 ad in the United States as a translated version in 2015) tells the story of a young girl named Elsa. She lives in Sweden and knows she is different from her peers. She is a bit of a pedant and shares a tremendously close relationship with her nutty grandmother. But when her grandmother dies, Elsa discovers the true nature and feelings of her grandmother. From there, she goes on a crazy adventure filled with drunks and monsters and other interesting things and people.

Kirkus Reviews loved the book, writing that My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry "[Is] a touching, sometimes-funny, often wise portrait of grief." Reviewers on Amazon likewise loved the book, awarding the book a spectacular rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. While a truly magnificent book, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry will likely not be widely remembered.

Nordisk Film acquired the rights to the book in May 2018. It is currently being developed into a film, but as of July 1st, 2019, no further information has been announced about the film -- including directors, actors, producers, or writers (etc.).
