Staring
Deeley tells the story of staring at Anna on a couch years earlier, and how it was a wonderful experience. Yet, Anna remembers it to be a cold experience. This is a metaphor for how a memory can be experienced completely different for people having been through the same moment together.
Thief
Deeley asks Kate early in the play if she was attracted to Anna because she was a thief. This is a metaphor for how Anna has stolen Deeley from Kate, that Anna's natural tendency is to steal but Kate hasn't seen it or wanted to see it.
Odd Man Out
Deeley's story of going to see Odd Man Out is a metaphor for how one of the women he is with is sensual, and the other judges and keeps herself at a distance from sensuality.
Hot Coffee
Deeley and Anna prepare hot coffee for one another. When Kate drinks it, the same coffee is cold from Deeley. This is a metaphor for how Anna and Deeley's relationship was hot while Deeley and Kate's was cold.
Globe-trotting
Deeley says that his job takes him around the globe. It is a metaphor for the fact that he isn't at home. While he might be a man of knowledge and travel, he knows less about his life at home.
