Why is it ironic that Iago is often called "honest" and "true," particularly by Othello?
Iago is clearly plotting against Othello, although it is not clear where his loyalties actually lie or why he wants to harm Othello. Iago is deceptive and cruel, but Othello trusts him deeply. The trust that both Othello and Roderigo put in Iago is gravely misplaced; constant references to Iago's apparent honesty and loyalty serve to underscore this fact.
