The main conflict in 'Hail Mary' is that the earth is on the verge of extinction. For instance, there is a prediction of a major catastrophe that is likely to destroy humanity and other creations. However, Ryland is responsible for saving the world because he is the sole survivor of the Hail Mary project. Nevertheless, the pressure for Ryland to save the world is intense, but he is determined to do his best.
