What does Immanuel Kant mean when he defines metaphysics as "reason’s knowledge of itself"?

Part of what Immanuel Kant tries to do in his Critique of Pure Reason (and subsequently, in the later works of his critical period) is to try to redefine metaphysics in terms of critique.
