    What does Immanuel Kant mean when he defines metaphysics as "reason’s knowledge of itself"?

    Part of what Immanuel Kant tries to do in his Critique of Pure Reason (and subsequently, in the later works of his critical period) is to try to redefine metaphysics in terms of critique. Kant elaborates more upon this in the "Conclusion" and the "Solution to the General Question of the Prolegomena," but critique for him is essentially the key to turning metaphysics into a respectable area of inquiry.
