Punch-Drunk Love Irony

Punch-Drunk Love Irony

Unbreakable

In one scene, Barry is touting his unbreakable handle to his toilet plunger while attempting to make a big sale to clients who are in his warehouse. Ironically, in an attempt to demonstrate it being unbreakable, Barry smashes the item when he tests it.

Salesman

Barry runs his own business and is working to make a sale with customers that are in his office. Ironically, he continues to take calls from his sisters during the process of the sale. Such a reaction shows that though he is enraged, he doesn't do anything to set boundaries with his family.

Blind Date

Barry says that he is going to his sister's birthday party. He confirms twice. Ironically, when another sister says she’s bringing someone for him to meet he says he can’t go. He is terrified to have to meet anyone new and get out of his comfort zone.

Help

Barry asks his brother-in-law to help him find medical attention, as he constantly is breaking down and crying uncontrollably. Ironically, his brother-in-law is a dentist, not a doctor or a psychiatrist who can help him find a solution.

Pay Per Call

Barry calls a sex hotline for one night in order to break out of his pain. Ironically, the woman calls him back the next day to extort him for rent money, and eventually sends men out to threaten and assault Barry and take his money.
