Mare Barrow
Mare Barrow is a seventeen-year-old girl at the beginning of Red Queen. She had acquired talents such as pick-pocketing and lying as a means to survive, because her family is both sick and poor. She has a little sister who has a talent for sewing and earns money for their family, but her hand is crushed, and her talents lost. She and her family lives in a village called the Stilts. She is of red blood, but discovers she has the power to control lightning when she falls into a pit during the kings trials. The king chooses to hide her identity and tell all of the other silvers that she is a long lost silver and that is why she has powers.
Prince Maven
Prince Maven is the youngest prince in the royal family and second to the throne. He is charming and nice, and Mare quickly grows feelings for him, even though she hates his kind (the Silvers). Later on, in the book, it is revealed that the prince is working for the queen, under her influence. He will be next in line, which means that she will indirectly rule the country. He tricks Mare and wishes her dead by the end of the book.
Prince Cal
Prince Cal is the oldest prince in the royal family and first to the throne. He is, like his brother, gentle and nice, and wishes the best for his country. He initially is the first person that lets Mare into the palace walls, as he pities her. They then grown an attraction to each other, as they learn to know each other better. They hate each other in the end, as Mare is inclined to revenge while Cal want peace.
