Crusoe has the ultimate challenge of being completely self-reliant. Discuss some of his successes and some of his trials in this endeavor.
Students may observe that Crusoe has both physical and psychological struggles. He has to endure the very idea of being stranded, and he has to throw off the incessant negative thoughts that come to mind, from the fear of being killed to the idea of taking his own life. Then there are endless physical tasks required for survival, from swimming out to the wreckage to acquiring food to building a dwelling. He finds it within himself to construct tools, walls, a roof, and to find food regularly.
