Sharp Objects Background

Sharp Objects Background

Written by Gillian Flynn of Gone Girl fame, Sharp Objects (Flynn's debut novel which was published in 2006) tells the story of a woman named Camille Preaker. After a while away and after a short spell at a psychiatric hospital, Preaker returns to her hometown to report on a series of gruesome murders that took place there. There, she is confronted with her past and all that comes with it (her family, past events, etc.) -- all while she has to deal with the murdered girls.

At release, received largely positive reviews. Kirkus Reviews, for example, absolutely loved the book, saying that it is "Piercingly effective and genuinely terrifying." Vulture liked the book, calling it "the ultimate Gillian Flynn novel" and saying that "This novel lets us examine all the sharp thoughts in our own heads, but with a layer of protection."

In 2018, over a decade after Sharp Objects was published, HBO released a miniseries of the same name based on the book. It received mostly positive reviews and was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards (Best Miniseries of T.V. Film, Best Actress - Miniseries or T.V. Film for Amy Adams, and Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film for Patricia Clarkson, which it won).
