The Master Cook
The Master Cook is the main cook in the village of Wootton Major. It is not known what is his name.
The young apprentice/Alf
Alf is the young cook whom the Master Cook brought with him to Wootton Major. Alf was too young, and nobody in the village treated him seriously, and called him Prentice, but with years he managed to get the position of the Master Cook in the village. In the end of the story it became known that Alf is the King in Faery.
Nokes
When the Master Cook left Wootton Major, the position of the cook stayed unoccupied, and people in the village chose Nokes to be the cook. Nokes is not a very skillful cook, and slyly peeps how Alf is working.
Smithson/Smith
Smithson, or later just Smith, is the boy who has swallowed the faystar at the Feast of Good Children. During many years this star gave him an ability to travel to Faery. In the end he gave up the star, and chooses the next boy who will receive the star. In Faery Smith is called Starbrow.
Nell
Nell is Smith’s wife.
Nan
Nan is Smith’s daughter.
Ned
Ned is Smith’s son.
The Queen
The Queen is a magic creature in Faery country.
Tim
Tim is a boy who is the next one to receive the star.
