Smith of Wootton Major Themes

Wandering

The theme of wandering and traveling is the major one in the story, which is allegorically presented by the wanderings to a magical country. Any journey is a set of experiences that a traveller acquires during the time spent in the journey, and this experience predetermines what kind of a character a person might grow into. On the example of Smith, the protagonist of the story, the author tries to convey a message that people tend to enrich those traits that they already possess. Smith, being a tolerable and kind person, grew into even more tolerable and kinder one.

Supernatural

The theme of supernatural in Smith of Wootton Major is narrowed to the spectrum that only a child would be interested in. The Queen and King of Faery, and other magic creatures that live in Faery, attract children, for a completely new world is opened before them. With the help of supernatural thematic elements, the author draws attention to such universal moral values as kindness, loyalty, fairness and gratitude.
