Describe the early relationship between Walter and Gertrude Morel. What draws them together? What makes them happy within the relationship? What causes the relationship to sour?
Walter's rough nature is clear from the beginning, and that's certainly part of what attracts Gertrude to him, as she wants a husband who differs from her father. The trouble in the family comes largely from their financial situation, as Gertrude's happiness fades when they live in the Bottoms and when Walter is found to be wasteful with money. As a result, Walter spends less time with his family and Gertrude feels increasingly trapped in their home.
