How do you respond to Baxter Dawes as a reader? Is he portrayed in a sympathetic light by the text? How does he compare or contrast with Paul?
Although most will find Baxter to be an antagonist to Paul, in that they both fight over Clara. However, the narrative also sets up Baxter as similar to Paul in that they both make claims about Clara and have expectations for her. That's only increased when Clara admits that she and Baxter had a connection that she lacks with Paul, urging Paul to grow more assertive.
