Introduction to Swami and Friends

Swami and Friends, published in 1935, is the first novel published by the Indian author R.K. Narayan. The title was changed from Swami the Tate to Swami and Friends to more closely align it with Rudyard Kipling's Stalky & Co. (1899) and thus make it appear more marketable as part of a sub-genre of schoolboy fiction. As the title suggests, the novel follows ten-year-old Swami and his friends on their adventures. Each chapter is a separate episode of a moment in Swami's life. Set in the fictional town of Malgudi during British colonial rule, Swami does start to become more politically conscious.
