Chapter 1 - Linear Functions - 1.2 Using Data to Create Scatterplots - 1.2 Exercises - Page 28: 1

Answer

a. 8.4 million British pounds b. 2003 c. (0,7.2) This means that in the year 2000, the prize money was 7.2 million British pounds d. Domain = [3,10]; Range = [9,13]

Work Step by Step

a. $x=2002-2000=2$ Since x=2, the prize money (y) is ~ 8.4 million British pounds. b. y=9 billion Since y=9 billion, the year (x) is 3 years since 2000, so that would be $2000+3=2003$ c. This graph crosses the vertical axis (y-axis) at about 7.2, so the vertical intercept is $(0,7.2)$ d. Since this data seems pretty consistent, I will go one year before and one year after the data. This makes the domain = [3,10]. I will do the same thing with the range keeping to the same year spread as the domain. This makes the range = [9,13]
