Chapter 1 - Functions and Limits - 1.1 Four Ways to Represent a Function - 1.1 Exercises - Page 20: 11

Answer

At age 0, the person weighs around 6 pounds (this is the y-intercept of the graph). As the person ages, their weight increases somewhat linearly to about 10 years old, after which we see a steeper increase in weight until around age 22. After age 22, the person's weight remains somewhat constant until age 30. There was a significant drop in weight at age 30. Possible reasons for this: This person is probably a woman because her average weight prior to being 30 is only around 150lb. So, she may may have become pregnant around 30 years old and, after giving birth, would have lost around 10lb after giving birth. The person's weight remains constant at about 125lb from about 30 years old to 35 years old. After this the person's weight spikes to around 175lb at age 40, increasing linearly to around 200 pounds at age 70.
