Chapter 1 - Section 1.1 - Real Numbers - 1.1 Exercises - Page 11: 62

Answer

(-1,0)

Work Step by Step

We are looking for an intersection of sets (-2,0) and (-1,1) which is denoted: (-2,0 )$\cap$(-1,1) Intersection of two sets is a set of elements that these two sets have in common, the first sets elements range from -2 up to 0 and parenthesis mean that endpoints are not included in the set, similarly second sets elements range from -1 up to 1 and endpoints are not included again. Solution is set (-1,0) because that is a number line segment they both share and endpoints are not included because even though -1 is the element of set (-2,0) it isn't element of set (-1,1) and similarly 0 is included in (-1,1) but isn't in (-2,0).
