Appendix C – 28 (Solution) Refer to the line y = $–\sqrt{x}$ in Graph I, it is a function because one corresponding value of y can always be found for any choice of x in the domain of $[0, \infty)$, and, by way of Vertical Line Test, each vertical line drawn will not intersect the line on the graph in more than one point, so, the equation defines a function further. x can only be represented by any real number with domain = $[0, \infty)$ since the radical must represent a non-negative number, and y will be any real number with range = $[0, –\infty)$.
