In stressed muscles, the myofibers increase their capacity to store glycogen; this enhances the length of time during which they can contract before resting.

Muscle fibers can split longitudinally and the myofibrils can increase in diameter.. Under stress myofibers produce more mitochondria and increase in size of thick and thin filaments ; more fast glycolytic fibers (FG) may develop at the expense of fast glycolytic oxidative (FOG) fibers.
Stressed muscles also develop more connective tissues. but the muscles of adult definitely do not undergo hyperplasia/mitosis.
