By the end of the fifth week of gestation (42 to 44) somites can be distinguished. Somites form from mesoderm and have three regions: each somote has a myotome section, a dermatome section and sclerotome section. The myotome develops into skeletal muscles; the dermatome develops into connective tissues (for example, the skin), and the sclerotome differentiates into vertebrae of the spinal column.
