Mastication is the process of chewing. The muscles that are important in carrying out this procedure are the masseter, the temporalis, the medial pterygoid, and the lateral pterygoid. There are other muscles of mastication, such as the digastric, the mylohyoid and the geniohyoid; these latter muscles function mainly as mandible depressors. The masseter is the chief of the muscles that function to elevate the mandible, and it is the strongest muscle of mastication.
