In the cerebral cortex there is some degree of spatial differentiation regarding where and how various types of neural signals /impulses are processed. The three big divisions o the cerebral cortex in this connection are the sensory cortex, the motor cortex and the association cortex The areas incorporated in these divisions are as follows:
Sensory cortex. The following are the subdivisions of the sensory cortex:
Primary somatosensory cortex ( Brodmann areas 1,2,and 3). This areas receives impulses from touch receptors concerned with touch, pressure, vibration, itch, tickle and proprioception
Primary visual area (17). Concerned with visual perception
Primary auditory cortex ( areas ( 41, 42
Gustatory areas (43) concerned with taste.
Primary olfactory area (28). concerned with olfactory perception
Motor cortex areas:
Primary motor area (4). This area has a somatotypic representation of the muscles of the body called ( homunculus) and controls contractions of skeletal muscle groups.
Brocas area (( 44, 45) ) controls the production of speech

The association cortex includes the primary somatosensory association cortex (5, 7) that facilitates discrimination of shapes sizes and relationships of objects; the facial recognition areas (20,21.23) that enables the recognition of faces, and Wernicke's area (22, 39, 40) that facilitates recognition of the spoken word. Other areas included in the association cortex are the auditory association area (22); the visual association area (18, 19); the orbitofrontal cortex (11); the common integrative area (5,7,39,40); the premotor area (6);the prefrontal cortex (9,10,11,, 12) and the frontal eye field(8) ; this last area controls voluntary scanning eye movements such as those used in reading.
