Chapter 14 - The Brain and Cranial Nerves - Checkpoint - Page 502: 21

Answer

The two halves of the brain look similar, but they are not identical either anatomically or functionally. These differences are usually subsumed under the term "lateralization of the cerebral hemispheres". Some degree of lateralization does exist, but the hemispheres are interdependent and function cooperatively One well known anatomical difference is the difference in size of a part of the temporal lobe-- from side to side--in most people ( over 65%) the planum temporale is 50% larger in the left hemisphere than in the right hemisphere. . Also the frontal area is wider in the right hemisphere, and the left occipital area is wider than right.

Work Step by Step

Some functional differences between the right and left cerebral hemispheres include the following: : The right hemisphere deals with music; artistic activities and capacities; space and pattern perception; facial recognition; odor perception and discrimination; generation, and comparison of mental images. In contrast, the different specialities of the left hemispheres involve reasoning; numerical and scientific skills; sign language comprehension, and the ability to understand spoken and written words.
