Thermal receptors in the hand detect heat stimuli. From these receptors stimuli are carried by first order neurons which have cell bodies in dorsal root ganglia.. In the spinal cord (SC) the first order neurons synapse with with cell bodies that lie in the posterior gray horns., From here second order neurons cross over (decussate) to the opposite ( contralateral) side--the right side in this case,-- of the SC. The impulses will ascend in the lateral spinothalamic tract. The axons of these second order neurons end in the ventral posterior nucleus of the thalamus. There they synapse with third order neurons.
