The two types of receptors are rods and cones. Rods provide black and white vision in dim light, and cones provide high and color vision in bright light visual acuity.

There about 120 million rods and about six million cones in each eye . Rods allow us to see in dim ligh, such as moonlight . There are three types of cones--red cones, blue cones and green cones-- which are sensitive to light in the red , green and blue light waves. Most of our color experiences are mediated by various combinations of these three types of wave lengths.
