The superior olivary nucleus is a complex of neurons in the gray matter of the pons. It consists of two groups which form the lateral superior olivary nucleus(LSO), and the medial superior olivary nucleus (MSO). The MSO is chiefly involved in the spatial localization of sounds. It does this by comparing the time of reception of a sound in the right and left ears.
