There are two kinds of equilibrium, static equilibrium and dynamic equilibrium. Static equlibrium involves the movement of the head in response to gravity. This is the kind of equlibrium is sensed by the maculae of the utricle and saccule. Dynamic, or rotational equilibrium, involves the acceleration of head in rotational, horizontal or vertical movement. This kind of equilibrium involves the crista ampullaris of the semicircular canals.
