Chapter 18 - The Endocrine System - Figure 18.5 - Page 624: 1

Answer

The hypophyseal portal veins carry blood from the median eminence of the hypothalamus-- where hypothalamic releasing hormones(HRHs), and hypothalamic inhibiting hormones(HIHs) are secreted-- to the anterior pituitary(AP). The AP is the target organ of these hypothalamic hormones.

Work Step by Step

Usually, in a circulatory system blood flows from heart to arteries to capillaries to veins and back to the heat, In a portal system, blood flows from one capillary system to veins, then to a second capillary network, without returning to the heart. A portal circulation system is usually named after the second capillary network. In the hypophyseal portal system, blood flows from capillaries in the hypothalamus into portal veins that carry it to capillaries in the anterior pituitary (AP/ hypophysis).
