The normal rate of production of erytrocytes (RBCs) by the bone marrow depends on the secretion of normal amounts of the hormone erythropoietin (EPO). Kidney malfunction-- as in kidney failure-- means that the liver is not stimulated to produce normal amounts of EPO.
The standard treatment for this malady is injection with Epoetin alfa which is a recombinant EPO preparation.
