Work Step by Step
Angiography is the process of obtaining radiographic images(angiograms) of arteries. To obtain a coronary angiogram a cathether is inserted into the femoral artery and passed upward-- under fluoroscopic guidance-- into the coronary artery. When the tip of the cathether is in the coronary arterty, a radiopaque contrast medium is injected into the coronary artery via the catheter. The images of the coronary arteries ( angiograms) are viewed and recorded on videotape or computer discs. Clot busting drugs like streptokinase and tissue plasminogen activator(tPA) can be injected into the coronary arterty via the catheter to dissovle emboli or thrombi.
