These structural defects have negative physiological consequences: there is decreased blood flow to the lungs, and oxygented blood and deoxgenated blood are mixed. This mixture results in a condition called cyanosis in which the blood displays a purplish color due to the high levels of carboxyhemoglobin in the blood. Babies who develop this kind of cyanosis are clinically designated as blue babies.
