In ventricular fibrillation the the ventricular pump stops working because of the asynchronous contraction of the cardiac muscle fibers. The result is that blood ejection ceases. Circulatory failure and death results from this condition unless, immediate medical treatment is available.

Ventricular fibrillation is a deadly arrhythmia. It can be caused by a myocardial infarction, by coronary artery disease, by cardiovascular shock, by electric shock, or low serum potassium. Ventricular arrhythmia causes unconsciousness in seconds ; this progresses to irreversible brain damage and seizures in about 5 minutes. Death follows shortly.
