Umbilical arteries (branches of the internal iliac) transport deoxygenated blood from the fetus to the placenta In the placenta oxygen and nutrients are picked up and Co2 and wastes are off-loaded, An umbilical vein carries blood out of the placenta ;one branch goes to the liver of the fetus and one branch goes to the ductus venosus and thence to the inferior vena cava.
