In meiosis 1 secondary spermatocytes are changed to primary spermatocytes . In this process the diploid number of chromosomes ( 2n, 46) is halved and the resulting primary spermatocytes have the haploid number or 2n chromosomes which in the case of human gametes is 23( 22 autosomes and one sex chromosome)

The primary spermatocytes which result from Meiosis 1 have the haploid number of chromosomes --22 autosomes and an X chromosome. However, each chromosomes in the primary spermatocyte consists of two chromatids still held together by a centromere.
