Answer

Transitional epithelium is to be found lining the urinary bladder, the urethra and parts of the ureters. This is an epithelial lining with several layers of cuboidal cells. These cells are flattened-- almost squamous-- in the relaxed state when the bladder is full, and more cuboidal when the bladder is empty and relaxed.

Work Step by Step

The chief function of transitional epithelium is to protect the bladder wall from tearing or rupturing as it expands and collapses in the filling and emptying phases of the process of micturation. This function is served adequately by the multiple layers of cells , by the ability of the cells to stretch and change shape from cuboidal to squamous, and from the fact that some cells do not reach the surface in the relaxed state of the bladder.
